Theth vs Valbona: Which Valley to Choose?
A complete guide to help you choose your perfect Albanian Alps adventure.
It is the question every traveller to the Albanian Alps asks: Theth or Valbona? Both valleys sit deep in the Accursed Mountains, both are surrounded by jagged 2,500-metre peaks, and both are connected by the iconic Valbona Pass trail. But they offer surprisingly different experiences.
Theth is the more dramatic of the two. The road in — now fully paved — winds up through the Boga valley to a village scattered across a wide green bowl. Highlights include the Blue Eye spring, the Grunas waterfall and the famous Lock-in Tower, a stone kulla where families once sheltered during blood feuds.

“You don't choose between Theth and Valbona — the mountain chooses for you.”
Valbona feels wilder and more remote. The valley floor follows a milky turquoise river, with guesthouses tucked under towering limestone walls. It is the better base if you want longer treks, including routes towards Çerem, Doberdol and the Montenegrin border.
If you can only pick one: choose Theth for scenery and sights in a compact area, and Valbona for serious hiking and a deeper wilderness feel. But the honest answer? Do both. The 6–7 hour hike over the Valbona Pass (1,795 m) between them is one of the great walks of Europe.

Practical tip: guesthouses fill up fast from June to September, so book ahead — and carry some cash, as card machines are still a rarity up in the mountains.
