  • Day 1: Tirana - Kruja - Shkodra

    The tour begins in Tirana with a morning departure toward the historic town of Kruja, once the stronghold of Albania’s national hero, Skanderbeg. Visit the Kruja Castle and explore the Old Bazaar, a charming, cobbled street lined with traditional shops offering handicrafts, carpets, and antiques. After lunch, continue the journey north to Shkodra, a city rich in cultural and historical heritage. Upon arrival, settle into a boutique hotel near the Gjuhadol neighborhood. Later, take part in an orientation workshop to meet fellow travelers, learn about the tour values—community respect, cultural preservation, low-impact travel—and prepare for the days ahead. The day concludes with a welcome dinner featuring local cuisine.

  • Day 2: Travel to Lepushe. Hiking from Lepusha to Vuthaj/Vusanje

    After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll drive to Lepushe, passing through the scenic Kelmendi region with a stop in Tamara, near the Cemi River canyons. Upon arriving in Lepushe, our hiking journey kicks off towards Vuthaj village. Crossing the Albania-Montenegro border, we ascend to the Peak of Vajusha/Talijanka (2056m) and continue to a narrow valley nestled between the karst tower of Karanfili. Here, we’ll marvel at the dramatic grey mountains of the Accursed Mountains massive, offering breathtaking views of the Balkans. But that’s not all—our journey continues in the picturesque Grebaje Valley, a lush masterpiece shaped by the Ice Age through glacier retreat, mirroring the other valleys on this tour. After completing the hike, we’ll take a minivan for a 30-minute drive to Vuthaj in Montenegro. Upon reaching Vuthaj, we’ll relax in a village guesthouse and enjoy a traditional dinner.

  • Day 3: Hiking from Vuthaj to Theth (through Peja Pass)

    The hike from Vuthaj, Montenegro to Theth, Albania, along the Peaks of The Balkans Trail, offers a memorable journey through captivating landscapes. Starting with the Grla waterfall and the Eye of the Grasshopper, we trek through valleys, including Lake Ropojan/Geshtares at the Montenegro-Albania border. The trail continues with a steep but enjoyable ascent through an old forest to the meadow of Runica, where colorful mountain flowers bloom. Along the way, we visit a friendly Albanian shepherd in his secluded shack, adding a unique touch to the journey. Crossing Runica, the trail ascends into valleys, creating a stunning staircase with the backdrop of Arapi Mount Peak. At the base, the Theth Valley unfolds, offering breathtaking views. The descent through the Qafa of Peja brings us to the village of Theth.

  • Day 4: Hiking from Theth to Valbona

    Today we embark on the most iconic hike of the Albanian Alps: the scenic trail from Theth to Valbona over the majestic Valbona Pass. This classic route connects two of Albania’s most beautiful alpine valleys and offers a full day immersed in breathtaking mountain landscapes.

    The trail begins with a gentle walk through the village of Theth and gradually ascends into forested paths. As we climb higher, the scenery opens up to reveal panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Reaching the Valbona Pass at 1,795 meters, we’re rewarded with a sweeping vista over both Theth and Valbona Valleys—an unforgettable highlight of the journey.

    After a well-deserved break at the top, we begin our descent into Valbona, passing through alpine meadows, rivers, and quiet forested trails. The hike ends in the wide and rugged Valbona Valley, where a short transfer takes us to our guesthouse for a warm meal and a restful night.

  • Day 5: Hiking from Cerem to Doberdol

    After a car transfer to Cerem village, our trek starting point, we head towards Doberdol along a scenic trail. After approximately two-hour hike, we’ll cross the border into Montenegro, passing through pine forests where, depending on the season, you may encounter blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. The captivating trail reaches its highest point, Ajluci Pass, at 2100 meters above sea level. Along the way, we pause at shepherd’s hut villages for a refreshing beverage. These summer-only habitats provide a unique perspective into the shepherds’ pastoral lifestyle. Our day concludes in Doberdol, situated at about 1800 meters above sea level. We’ll spend the night in a shepherd’s hut (4-5 people shared room, toilet outside). After a home-cooked dinner, relax by the bonfire, and learn more about the region’s shepherding lifestyle.

  • Day 6: Hiking Doberdol-Babino Polje-Vermosh

    The hike from the remote Albanian village of Doberdol to the beautiful Montenegrin valley of Babino Polje is an unforgettable adventure. Beginning with a climb to Tromeda/Trekufiri Peak, relish the unique experience of standing in three countries simultaneously: Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. The next segment, known as “Flat Mountain,” is a favorite among many. The mountaintop extends into a plateau with a trail winding through blueberry bushes, creating a relaxed walk in pristine nature. The hike leads to Fairy/Hridsko Jezer Lake, named after legends of inhabiting fairies, offering a refreshing swim opportunity. Upon reaching Babino Polje, take a local passenger van after refreshment. A 30-minute drive transports us to Vermosh, the northern village of Albania, where we’ll spend the night, concluding a day filled with natural wonders and cultural exploration.

  • Day 7: From Vermosh to Tirana (stop at Mrizi i Zanave)

    The final day in the Albanian Alps will begin in Vermosh with a morning stretching session or other optional activities like yoga, meditation, or breathing exercises for those who prefer. After breakfast, we will take the road back to Tirana. In 2.5 hours’ drive, we will make a stop at Mrizi i Zanave agritourism, an exemplary sustainable tourism initiative. Located in the farming village of Fishtë, it is considered by many as the epitome of Albanian slow food. We will enjoy a farm-to-table lunch, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Finished the lunch we will return to Tirana. After accommodation and relax in the hotel we are ready to feel the capital evening vibes.

  • Day 8: Morning in Tirana – A Blissful Farewell

    Following breakfast at the hotel, take some time for a free leisurely exploration of Tirana by visiting key attractions such as the National Museum, Skanderbeg Square, House of Leaves, and Bunk’Art. The specific activities will be tailored based on your departure schedule, ensuring a delightful experience before you leave. As you embark on your journey home, our team will ensure a smooth transfer to Tirana International Airport, carrying the essence of this unique experience with you.

    This is an intensive tour that is more suitable for people in good physical condition. The majority of the trails are easily navigable and well-maintained, yet there are sections with narrow and steep descents. To fully appreciate this trip, a reasonable level of hiking experience and fitness is essential.
  • BEST TIME TO TRAVEL
    This tour can be done anytime between June and September. The best time for walking with fewer tourist at the popular locations is June and September. July and August are also suitable, but it’s important to note the possibility of high temperatures on some days.
  • WHERE WE STAY
    Accommodations: 2 nights in 3-4 stars hotels in Shkodra and/or Tirana. 4 nights with dinner and breakfast in mountain guesthouses: from these 1 night in rooms with 3-4 beds per room, which means you might share the room with other travellers. Depending on the season and availability of rooms in a few remote villages, shared bathrooms may be available in few cases. 1 night in shepherd hut, in shared rooms and toilet outside.

    PAYMENT AND CANCELATION POLICY Payments: A 20% deposit is required at the time of booking to confirm your reservation. The remaining 80% balance is due 45 days before the tour departure. For shorter trips (3 days or less), the balance is due 20 days before the tour departure. Cancellations & Refunds: 70 days or more before departure: 100% refund of the deposit amount paid. 69–45 days before departure: Loss of the 20% deposit. 30–44 days before departure: Loss of 30% of the total tour price. 15–29 days before departure: Loss of 50% of the total tour price. 8–14 days before departure: Loss of 75% of the total tour price. 7 days or less before departure: Loss of 100% of the total tour price (no refund). Postponements: If you wish to postpone instead of cancel, you can do so free of charge up to 45 days prior to departure, and all payments will be credited toward future travel.     It was extreme good luck chancing upon Up Albania and the ‘Peaks of the Balkans’ trekking package. Everything was meticulously planned and executed; the itinerary, accommodation, transfers and the yummy traditional culinary delights.
    I was initially sceptical being told we had the best guide, but Saimir was the best! He not only made us feel safe and comfortable, but also kept us in splits of laughter with his many anecdotes and stories.
    Thank you Up Albania for a wonderful, unforgettable experience that has left me wanting more.
